The Aptitude Project

Have you ever wondered why some people can learn foreign languages more easily than other people? That’s what we hope to find out. The Aptitude Project is a large study taking place throughout 2022 – 2023 across the Netherlands, organised by the University of Amsterdam. Our goal is to discover what makes a good language learner.

Taking part in the Aptitude Project

1 – Join online

Anyone taking a Dutch language course in the Netherlands can join the Aptitude Project via the website. After answering a few questions about your Dutch language course, you will receive an email with your log-in ID and password.

2 – Record your aptitude profile

Log in to the Aptitude Project at the start of your Dutch course to complete some questionnaires, cognitive tests, and a Dutch language test. To learn more about recording your aptitude profile, read more details below.

3 – Test your progress

After your Dutch course, finish the Aptitude Project by doing the Dutch language test again. You get your test scores both times, so you can see how much progress you make!

What is involved?

Completing your aptitude profile at the start of your Dutch course takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes. Your aptitude profile consists of 4 questionnaires, 4 cognitive tests, and a Dutch language test.

While creating your aptitude profile, you receive your scores and personalised feedback about your level of motivation, your learning approach, personality type, and your performance on the cognitive tests.

For more information about the questionnaires and tests, click on ‘Learn More’ below.

After your Dutch course, take the language test again. You receive your Dutch test score both times, so you can see how much progress you make!

1 in 10 people to complete the Aptitude Project will be chosen at random and emailed a €20 Bol voucher!
